5 Trailer Parts You Should Always Keep on Hand

Trailers make life easier. The ability to dramatically increase your hauling capacity just by clicking a trailer onto a hitch can almost feel like a superpower!

But with great power comes great responsibility. Trailers won’t last if you don’t maintain them, and some parts can wear out faster than others. Check your trailer’s spare parts against this list; it may be time to go shopping for trailer parts in Orlando to ensure you keep your hauling superpowers.

1. Wheels and Tires

These may be the most obvious “spares” to have. Your trailer’s tires are the only part that makes constant contact with the ground.

When you run over nails, screws, sharp rocks, or any other object that can puncture a tire, you don’t want that event to be game over for your towing adventure. Keep a spare wheel and tire (or two, or more!) ready for when a flat inevitably happens.

2. Lights

Even if you do a check of all the lights before you drive off, bulbs can burn out at the most inopportune time. You can’t just bank on other drivers seeing your tow vehicle’s lights because the trailer may completely block them. Having a trailer light out can also result in an expensive, unexpected ticket!

3. Wheel Bearings

These may be tough to install, but it’s worth learning how to do it. When bearings go bad, they create a lot of heat due to friction. At first, this can just create an annoying sound and cause a little more drag. But when these bearings fail, they can cause immediate and long-term damage to your trailer.

Wheel bearings keep your wheels turning smoothly for a smooth ride. Invest in a few sets of bearing kits as well as the tools necessary to change them out. At the very least, if you have the kits on hand, a mechanic can repair your trailer immediately rather than wait for them to order parts.

4. Straps and Tie-Downs

While not “parts” per se, they are essentials for any trailer owner. You never know when you’ll have to strap down a large item or one of the links on your security chain will break. There are very few examples where someone is transporting cargo and will not need multiple or redundant ways to secure cargo.

5. Wheel Chocks

Having wheel chocks will make sure your trailer stays stable and that it will not roll on uneven surfaces.
